Betty Wright Lane

A portion of Northwest 14th Avenue from 62nd to 67th Streets, near where she grew up in the Liberty City Projects, had been renamed Betty Wright Lane. The honor is the latest to be bestowed upon the late, Grammy-award-winning soul star. County and city leaders unveiled the new sign today while Betty’s children and other family members looked on.

“She was a Miami product, born and raised in Liberty City, and so, for us, it’s important that we remember the legacy of those that paved the way for others,” said Miami Mayor Francis Suarez.

City Commissioner Keon Hardemon, whose district the portion of street is in, said, “Great things come from Liberty City. It tells people can amount to anything that they put their mind to and all they have to do is chase their passion.”

All three of Betty's daughters - Namphuyo Aisha McCray, Patrice Parker and Asher Williams also spoke at the ceremony.

“For years to come, people will ride by and see Betty Wright Lane," McCray said. “They might ask, ‘Who is that?’ And somebody may answer. And they may look her up and find her life story and what she did. And it’s inspiring. You cannot look at Betty Wright's story and not be inspired by that.”

The campaign to get the street renamed in Betty's honor was led by her dear and longtime friend Lovette McGill.
